Whether you think it’s a trend or fad, it feels like sushi is definitely on the rise these days. You see in it your local grocery stores like Central Market and Whole Foods. Those are great if you are looking for something quick and easy but if you are looking for something with a more modern feel, then Austin’s very own restaurants Uchi and Uchiko are your next destination.
Not only do you have two restaurants you can choose from but both restaurants are owned by Tyson Cole, who has appeared on Iron Chef America and has won “Best Chef, Southwest” at the James Beard Foundation Awards. So, just knowing the type of skills available at the restaurant should get you excited to even try this place. Uchi, meaning house in Japanese, is more contemporary Japanese dining, while its sister restaurant, Uchiko is more Japanese farmhouse dining. Uchi prides in having the freshest products and even fly in seafood from Tokyo, Japan.
While dining at Uchi, you can enjoy a variety of dishes. The menu includes cool tastings, hot tastings, tempura, agemono, sushi and sashimi, makimono, even a chef’s tasting, which includes a ten-course chef’s daily tasting menu, and so much more. To go with your fabulous dinner, pair it up with some wine and sake. There are so many different types of sake at Uchi. So if you haven’t had sake before, this is the perfect opportunity to try it. To end your dining experience, definitely try out one of their unique desserts.
Similar to Uchi, Uchiko also offers cool tastings, hot tastings, greens, agemono, makimono, sushi and sashimi but to differentiate the dishes at Uchiko use different ingredients than those at Uchi. Uchiko also offers yakimono, while Uchi does not. Pair up your sushi with either some dessert wine or sake and end your dinner with some dessert. A personal favorite from Uchiko would be the hot rock from the hot tastings, brussels sprouts from the agemono portion of the menu, ham and eggs from the makimono portion of the menu and end it with the fried milk from the desserts.
So whether you’re going there for a special occasion or just want to treat yourself to a fabulous dinner, you definitely will not be disappointed in either Uchi or Uchiko. Happy dining!
